Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak || Classic Literature || BANNED BOOK FROM SOVIET RUSSIA || TIMELESS LITERARY MASTERPIECE

Doctor Zhivago: The Classic Novel penned by Boris Pasternak, was first published 1957 in Italy. The story unfolds against the backdrop of significant historical events, spanning from the Russian Revolution of 1905 to World War II.

The protagonist, Yuri Zhivago is a physician and poet. The novel begins with a Russian Orthodox funeral liturgy for Yuri's mother (Marya Nikolaevna Zhivago). Abandoned by his father, Yuri is taken in by his maternal uncle (Nikolai Nikolaevich Vedenyapin), a philosopher and former Orthodox priest. Yuri's father (Andrei Zhivago), once wealthy, has squandered the family fortune in Siberia through debauchery.
The novel's publication was controversial due to Pasternak's critical stance on the October Revolution. It was initially refused publication in the USSR. However, at the instigation of Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, the manuscript was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak's work earned him the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year, which both embarrassed and enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

Doctor Zhivago weaves together personal and historical narratives, capturing the tumultuous period of early 20th-century Russia through the eyes of its compelling characters.
