    5. The Confessions by Saint Augustine

Henry David Thoreau was the original anarchist. Unafraid to buck the system in his essay Civil Disobedience he has issued a lasting impact on social and political thought. Thoreau believed individuals should not permit governments to overrule their consciences and that they have a duty to avoid allowing such acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice. Thoreau was also a passionate abolitionist and advocate for equally distributed human rights. He spoke out against slavery and the Fugitive Slave Law Thoreau also defended John Brown – The abolitionist who led an armed insurrection at Harpers Ferry.

Thoreau may have been considered radical or eccentric is his time, but his wisdom as well as his compassion for mankind and lifelong quest for knowledge prove the necessity for understanding the man and his legacy. So, incredibly accomplished as he was; it’s difficult to believe that he only survived to the age of 44 years old. However, as much as we must pay tribute and reverence to the work of Thoreau; we must also give dedication in our credence to the learning of his influences.

Books are a powerful tool. And while television and films may be preferred varieties of education and entertainment, as well as more practical when sharing these experiences with friends and family; there’s no picture more precious as the one painted in your mind as inspired by a great book!
