Reading Together as a Family: A Bust-Down Book Offering in the Yuletide Spirit of Giving
Our Gift to you and Blessings to all

Okay, so here’s the deal.

You’re a single mother struggling to make ends meet with two children in grade school. Your rent is approaching due, the bills are unpaid and everywhere you look, the stores are shouting: Merry Christmas. It’s that time of year again. Oh joy! Deck The Halls...Fa, la, la, la!
But it isn’t like that, is it? You hardly have the energy to put food on the table. Your job is a drag, your kids spend far too much time on their phones, and you know it, but it’s the only time you have to find a little peace for yourself. And now you have to think about presents when you can hardly meet the demands of daily life. Between the stress of work and the pace of your days, the sheer physicality of making ends meet grinds you down to the bone.

And now I come along with some cock-and-bull story about reading together with your children at night. Who the hell does she think she is?

I remember those days too. I remember coming home to the phone disconnected before there was internet and you had to go to the bank and withdraw the fifty dollars, then dash downtown to the phone company and pay it in person. The problem was, I didn’t have fifty dollars so I had to float a check at the grocery store hoping it wouldn’t clear before I got my paycheck. That was the first fifty that had to come out and then to everybody else I had to borrow from to get to payday.

In those days, we went to the library a lot, mostly on Saturdays because it was free and there was an activity center in the children’s section. There were books and toys and bean bags and other children to play with – quietly, of course. It was like an inside park.

But if I had it to do over, I would have read on a more regular basis. A lot is expected of a single mother, but reading together with your children is an undertaking that has the power to make a difference in each of your lives.

It takes preparation to commit to reading every day. Like anything else, it’s a muscle that needs exercise. Once in motion though, it’s hard to live without because it’s the time of day one truly welcomes.

Bust-Down Books wants to partner you in this activity because we actually believe books and reading can change lives for the better. We believe it has the means to tap into the potential of each person.

Reading together as a family closes the door on the outside world and opens it to another, to a world full of wonder. It is transformative.
