The Ultimate NerdMiner Starter Guide
The NerdMiner is a fascinating, low-power device that allows anyone to participate in the process of Bitcoin solo mining. It’s an accessible, fun project that won't require a warehouse or a massive electricity bill. While the odds of hitting a block are low, the experience and the possibility of a $300,000+ payout make it a thrilling, hands-on gateway to understanding how proof-of-work operates. Get started with one of our three equipment options below!
What is a NerdMiner and How Does it Work? (The Basics)
The NerdMiner is an open-source project based on a low-cost, readily available ESP32 microcontroller (like the LILYGO T-Display S3). It constantly calculates and submits partial hashes to the Bitcoin network in a competition for a block reward.
- Minimal Power: It consumes only a few watts, costing pennies per year to run.
- Solo Mining: You are mining directly to your own Bitcoin address; if you win, the entire block reward is yours.
- Educational Value: It provides a visible, running display of your device's speed (hash rate) and the current block data.
- Fun & Decorative: It serves as a great desk accessory and conversation starter!
Note: The device simply requires Wi-Fi and power. No complicated software or external computer is needed once set up.
Option 1: The Minimalist & Budget Setup
Required Equipment:
- Microcontroller: LILYGO T-Display S3 (Most common and affordable choice).
- Power: Any standard Micro-USB or USB-C cable and a 5V power adapter.
- Case: Not required for functionality, but recommended for protection. (3D printable STL files are free online).
Step-by-Step Setup:
- Flash Firmware: Use the web-based installer (e.g., ESP Web Tools) to flash the latest NerdMiner firmware directly to the LILYGO board via a USB connection.
- Configure Wi-Fi: Power on the device. It will broadcast its own Wi-Fi network. Connect your phone/PC to this network.
- Set Wallet: In the configuration page, enter your personal Bitcoin address (taproot preferred) and your local Wi-Fi credentials.
- Start Mining: Save and reboot. The device will automatically connect to your Wi-Fi and begin mining!
Option 2: The Desktop Display Setup (Recommended)
Required Equipment:
- Microcontroller: M5Stack Core or M5Stack Core S3 (higher quality screen and built-in enclosure).
- Power: USB-C cable and adapter (included with some kits).
- Case: Built-in high-quality enclosure for a finished, professional look.
- Extras: Buttons for easy on-device re-configuration without connecting to a PC.
Step-by-Step Setup:
- Flash Firmware: Due to the slightly different chipset, use the appropriate M5Stack-specific NerdMiner firmware via the web installer.
- On-Device Config: Power on. Use the physical buttons (if available) to navigate to the setup screen.
- Input Details: Enter your Wi-Fi and Bitcoin address directly on the device using the built-in screen and controls.
- Monitor: Place it on your desk and enjoy the high-resolution, full-color display of your hash rate and Bitcoin's progress!
Option 3: Advanced & Multi-Unit Setup
Required Equipment:
- Microcontrollers: Multiple ESP32-based devices (e.g., four LILYGO T-Displays).
- Hub: A powered USB hub to run all units simultaneously from a single wall socket.
- Network: Ensuring your router can handle multiple IoT devices efficiently.
- Cooling: Optional small fan or heatsinks, especially if stacking devices close together.
Why Go Multi-Unit?
Running multiple miners increases your combined hash rate, marginally improving your statistical odds of solving a block. This option is for those who are serious about the hobby and want a slightly more involved project.
Setup Considerations:
- Separate Configurations: Each unit must be configured individually with the same Bitcoin wallet address.
- Heat Management: Monitor the temperature, as running multiple units in a small space can generate more heat than a single unit.
- Power Efficiency: Use a single, high-quality, efficient powered hub to maximize power consistency.
