Extended Synopsis

In this highly anticipated second volume, first-generation Jungian psychologist Barbara Hannah tackles the complex and vexing theme of the animus with an unsurpassed comprehensiveness in analytical literature. Compiled posthumously from handwritten notes, typed manuscripts, previously published articles, and lecture drafts, this work reflects the natural spirit and intellect of a woman who worked directly alongside C.G. Jung.

Her insights stem from a personal grappling with her own animus while integrating the experiences of many psychotherapists in her circle. Thematically, this volume explores profound archetypal subjects, including the case of the sixteenth-century nun Jeanne Fery, the animus in the Book of Tobit, the presence of the animus in literature—specifically the Brontës—and the ultimate meaning of the animus for modern women.

Reader Targeting

  • Students, academics, and practitioners of Jungian psychology and psychoanalysis.
  • Readers seeking deep, clinical, and mythological insights into women's psychology and the animus archetype.
  • Those interested in the historical development of analytical psychology by first-generation pioneers.

About the Author
