The Bridge on the River Kwa by Pierre Boulle is a novel about British prisoners of war forced by the Japanese to build a bridge over the River Kwai during World War II.

The story centers on the conflicting motivations of the POWs, particularly the pride of Colonel Nicholson, who becomes obsessed with building a superior bridge as a testament to British discipline and ingenuity, and the efforts of Allied commandos to sabotage it.

The Plot:

The novel follows three main characters: Colonel Nicholson, who initially refuses to let his officers work on the bridge but later becomes consumed with making it the best possible structure; Major Shears, an American who escapes and is later sent back to help destroy the bridge; and Major Warden, a commando on a mission to sabotage it.

Themes:

The book explores themes of pride, duty, and the conflict between national honor and the practicalities of survival. It questions what happens when a rigid sense of honor leads to a distorted and futile obsession, where the prisoner of war becomes an ally to his enemy in building the very thing that is meant to be destroyed.

Setting:

The story is set against the historical backdrop of the construction of the Burma Railway in 1942–1943, a project known as the "Death Railway" due to the high number of deaths among the prisoners and conscripts who built it.

Fictional vs. Historical: While using the real-life setting of the Burma Railway, the plot and characters are fictional. The novel is partly based on Boulle's own experiences as a prisoner of war, notes the 20th Century Files. Captured by the Japanese, British soldiers and their ranking officer, Colonel Nicholson are forced to construct a strategic railroad bridge.

Despite the cruel treatment by the brutal Colonel Saito, Nicholson displays unyielding courage and the bridge becomes a matter of obsessive British pride to him. Meanwhile, the British High Command has instructed a commando team to destroy the vital span.

Summary:

The Bridge over the River Kwai is a novel by the French novelist Pierre Boulle, published in French in 1952 and English translation by Xan Fielding in 1954.
