Writing from a house built as an exact replica of his childhood home, Bento sets out to tie the beginning of his life back to its end. The plot traces his adolescent love for his brilliant next-door neighbor, Capitú, his escape from an unwanted destiny in the Catholic seminary, and his subsequent marriage. However, the narrative is entirely consumed by his escalating, radioactive paranoia and obsession that Capitú has committed adultery with his absolute best friend, Escobar.

The entire book acts as a masterclass in the unreliable narrator device. Because Bento is a professional lawyer presenting his life story like a legal brief to convict his wife in the court of public opinion, the narrative is warped by severe jealousy, selective omissions, and self-justifying leaps in logic. The novel leaves readers with an endless psychological enigma: Did Capitú actually betray him, or is the book a chilling portrait of a man constructing a house of delusions?
