Fire and Ice: The Cascade Volcanoes
by Stephen L. Harris
When Washington's Mt. St. Helens rumbled, quaked and began throwing out ash and volcanic debris in March 1980, Pacific Northwesterners suddenly became volcano watchers as did people across the country, through the eyes of color television cameras.
After all, not since Mt. Lassen erupted in 1914 had the continental U.S. seen anything like it.
Author Stephen Harris was on the scene, to record much of the St. Helens activities in this revised edition of his popular geology of the Cascade volcanoes.
Harris covers the 17 major volcanoes from Lassen in California to Garibaldi in B.C., explaining how the volcanoes were formed and projecting what might happen in their volcanic futures.
Volcanoes have been a serious hobby for many years for Harris, a Full Professor of Humanities at California State University, Sacramento, where he teaches a course in volcanology in the Geology Department in addition to courses in his field.
