A Landmark of 90s Electronic Rock. Released in 1998, Version 2.0 is the second studio album by the American-Scottish rock band Garbage. This album saw the band—consisting of Shirley Manson, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch Vig—expand their signature sound, blending dark, introspective lyrics with high-tech production and "pop" sensibilities.
An instant commercial and critical success, the album topped charts in the UK, France, and New Zealand, and earned Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Rock Album. To date, it has sold over four million copies worldwide.
Production & Artistic Style
Recorded at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, Version 2.0 was a technical marvel for its time. Utilizing 48-track digital systems and early Pro Tools rigs, the band created "sample collages" with some songs featuring up to 120 audio tracks. The result is a lush, futuristic landscape that balances "the super-hi-fi with the super-organic."
Lead singer Shirley Manson provided all the lyrics, crafting a more direct and personal narrative than their debut. From the frantic energy of "Push It" to the haunting beauty of "The Trick Is to Keep Breathing," the album captures the "Range of Light" and darkness that defined the late-90s alternative scene.
