Guns of the Dawn: The First Casualty of War is Truth

by Adrian Tchaikovsky

The first casualty of war is truth . . .

From Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning author Adrian Tchaikovsky comes Guns of the Dawn, a gripping story of war set in a fantastical, alternate-historical Europe with a touch of sorcery.

After generations of peace, a brutal conflict erupts between Denland and its royalist neighbor, Lascanne. Genteel Emily Marshwic watches as the war takes her family's young men, but when the call comes for conscripted women, she must join the ranks and march toward the front lines.

With minimal training, Emily braves the savage reality of warfare. As she is confronted with the horrors of battle, she begins to doubt her country's cause. Her choices will not only determine her own future but also the fate of two nations locked in a bloody and bitter conflict.

  • "One of the best books I've ever read" — Peter Newman, author of The Vagrant

  • "An exciting fantasy novel that's part French Revolution, part Vietnam War film, part Jane Austen, part strange new world of its own"
