The Story Behind the Blanket:
Textile fabrics provide great comfort and protection. When woven together into a blanket, they are a source of warmth and beauty and have been for thousands of years. Swaddling a newborn is the ultimate in comfort. A toddler attaches to the familiarity of their own blanket, sometimes fiercely defending it even from a wash.
My wish, all along, has been to connect at a fundamental point of value, a place where everyone shares a common linkage. A blanket is what emerged.
By purchasing a blanket, one takes pleasure in the product but also in the comfort of knowing that the purchase connects the buyer to the hands that made it. The threads of your life will interweave with those of another. It is not an ordinary purchase. It is not an ordinary gift, but the gift of connection with women who have been traumatized, displaced, dispossessed, and are now living in an atmosphere of unfamiliarity. Worse yet, for those who still endure genocide, war, and famine.
My personal contribution is selecting the finest fabrics for the blankets; thus, there will always be a variety depending on where I am in the world and what fabrics appeal to us as a community of women working with their hands. Today, the blankets are made from Liberty fabrics and patterns inspired by William Morris. I have also carefully selected the African prints from reliable sellers. All the fabrics have been hand-picked in London. The cost of the blankets reflects the product and the gift of donation to the House Without Borders, so that we can help those who come to us in need.
“May I be a protector for those without one,
A guide for all travelers on the way;
May I be a bridge, a boat and a ship
For all who wish to cross (the water)…”

About A House Without Borders:
Welcome to House Without Borders. We are a Polish foundation working with victims of war.

House Without Borders is an educational foundation that promotes holistic education, respect for human rights, and a spiritual worldview through educational and artistic activities. We actively support both displaced and dispossessed people, both victims of forced movement. We provide direct assistance by employing them in our activities. House Without Borders is involved in several projects. The Doll Project, made possible by a grant from the John and Mima Kulle Foundation, employs Ukrainian refugees making dolls and toys for Palestinian orphans. The project has a double purpose: to provide an opportunity for refugee women to produce simple, handmade dolls for the orphans, and to work in a secure environment free from exploitation. We also send funds to support individuals we know, with whom we have a personal relationship in Gaza, who are barely surviving a desperate situation.
A second project is selling handmade crib blankets as a way of connecting mothers globally, raising funds for victims of war.
A passage from the insert included with each blanket offers an idea of our ethos:
“May we gather on common ground upon which we can agree that the murder of women and children is unacceptable, without exception. Justifying the massacre, slaughter, and murder of women and children is nothing more than the deceit of deranged world leaders who have convinced themselves and us that the only way to live in this world is to establish a formula whereby one is identified as chosen and the other as ‘The Other’.”
