Extended Synopsis
In Napoleon: A Life, award-winning historian Andrew Roberts delivers the definitive biography of the great soldier-statesman. While Austerlitz, Borodino, and Waterloo stand among the greatest battles in history, Napoleon Bonaparte was far more than a military genius. Roberts presents the first one-volume biography to fully integrate the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, radically transforming our understanding of his character and motivation. Revealing him as a protean multitasker, decisive leader, and surprisingly forgiving figure, Roberts proves Napoleon was one of the greatest soldier-statesmen of all time, alongside George Washington and Julius Caesar. With profound insight, Roberts draws on fresh archival discoveries and his own journeys to fifty-three of Napoleon's sixty battle sites—including a voyage to St. Helena—to present a magisterial, beautifully written portrait worthy of its historic subject.
