Extended Synopsis
In the summer of 1920, a dapper and charming immigrant named Charles Ponzi orchestrated what would become the most legendary financial fraud in modern history. Promising to double investors’ money in just three months, Ponzi elevated the “rob Peter to pay Paul” strategy to an unprecedented art form, raking in over $2 million per week at his Boston office. Ponzi's Scheme meticulously chronicles this rise to wealth and the subsequent collapse of his house of cards, triggered largely by the relentless investigative reporting of the Boston Post.
Mitchell Zuckoff presents a classic American tale of the immigrant experience and the intoxicating lure of the success dream. Through vivid historical detail, this work explores how Ponzi became a magnetic scoundrel, practicing a brand of financial alchemy that continues to serve as the blueprint for fraud today. It is a compelling investigation into greed, ambition, and the fragile nature of financial confidence.
