Privacy in the Age of Big Data: Recognizing Threats, Defending Your Rights, and Protecting Your Family
by Theresa Payton & Theodore Claypoole | Foreword by Howard A. Schmidt
In today's world, our personal information is collected on a scale never before seen. Corporations, governments, and even our neighbors can know where we are, what we like, and who we meet. Privacy in the Age of Big Data, a thorough update to a classic in the field, addresses this global privacy problem head-on.
The past decade has brought relentless data-capturing systems and a rise in new regulatory regimes. From smart TVs that recognize who's watching to new networks created by personal smart devices, the intrusions never seem to end. The pandemic only accelerated these trends, making "contactless everything" the norm and spreading personal data across dozens of online platforms. People want to keep their lives private, but they don't know how.
Written by former White House CIO Theresa Payton and privacy law expert Ted Claypoole, this updated second edition helps everyday people understand their personal privacy vulnerabilities and provides solutions for a safer, more private life. Unlike other books that focus on technical or academic concerns, this guide uses down-to-earth prose and examples from daily life to show you:
- How to understand your current digital footprint.
- What you can do to claw back your privacy.
- How to secure your private information for the future.
This book is an essential guide for anyone who wants to enjoy a modern life while taking back control of their privacy.
