Extended Synopsis
Inspector John Appleby faces a puzzling death. Philip Ploss, a quiet man known for writing mid-level nature poetry, has been murdered. Why would someone kill such a harmless individual? Meanwhile, Sheila Grant overhears two men on a train discussing poetry in an absurd, suspicious manner—a conversation that quickly places her in grave danger.
Back in London, Inspector Appleby learns of a kidnapping on a train in Scotland and immediately senses a connection to the Ploss murder. To solve the case, Appleby must locate Sheila, racing against time to find her alive. Part of Michael Innes's celebrated Inspector Appleby series, this classic wartime thriller weaves a tale of murder, kidnapping, and German spies into a masterpiece of suspense.
