From the Book: The Shy One | Written by Dorothy Nathan & Illustrated by Carolyn Cather

Dorothy sat on the porch steps and stared up at the sky. Suddenly she saw a single star, the first star of evening. She clasped her hands and softly chanted:

"Star light, star bright
First star I see tonight.
Wish I may, wish I might
Have the wish I wish tonight."

She waited a long time, going over in her mind all the things she might wish for. Then, from within the deepest layers of her heart, Dorothy wished to stop being shy.

Book Description

Dorothy doesn't know how she can stand it. Her fourteen-year-old Uncle Max has been put into her own fifth-grade classroom!

Dorothy knows she should be nice to him—he's just come from Russia and doesn't know English. But she's never been so ashamed!

Oh, why does it have to happen to her-just when she's beginning to make friends?
