Extended Synopsis
In Sonny Boy, iconic actor Al Pacino delivers an astonishingly revelatory account of a creative life lived in full. Bursting onto the scene in the early 1970s with a meteoric rise unmatched since Marlon Brando or James Dean, Pacino delivered back-to-back legendary performances in The Panic in Needle Park, The Godfather, Serpico, The Godfather Part II, and Dog Day Afternoon. Yet, before the global superstardom, he had already lived several lifetimes: navigating the bohemian world of New York's avant-garde theater, enduring poverty to support his craft, and being shaped by the uncompromising streets of the South Bronx.
This memoir is the story of a man with nothing left to fear and nothing left to hide. Pacino chronicles all the great roles, essential collaborations, and important relationships that defined his career, alongside a candid examination of the vexed marriage between high-level creativity and commerce. The golden thread tying his narrative together is an enduring spirit of love and purpose. Long before the earthly rewards of fame were evident, Pacino fell deeply in love with the craft of acting—a love he never abandoned, and one that became his lifelong salvation.
