Film Synopsis

In The Terminal, Tom Hanks delivers an unforgettable performance as Viktor Navorski, a traveler from the fictional Eastern European nation of Krakozhia. While mid-flight to New York City, a violent military coup erupts in his homeland, leaving his passport completely invalid. Trapped in the international transit lounge at JFK International Airport, Viktor cannot step foot onto American soil nor return home.

As days turn into months, Viktor transforms the cold airport terminal into his own vibrant community. Along the way, he crafts an unexpected romance with flight attendant Amelia Warren (Catherine Zeta-Jones), plays matchmaker for airport staff, and tests the patience of the rigid airport official Frank Dixon (Stanley Tucci).

Collector’s Trivia & Behind-the-Scenes

  • Fascinating True Inspiration: The premise of the film was inspired by the real-life 16-year airport stay of Iranian refugee Mehran Karimi Nasseri in Paris.
  • The Language of Krakozhia: To craft Viktor’s distinct Slavic accent and language, Tom Hanks drew inspiration from his real-life father-in-law, Allan Wilson (born Hassan Halilov Ibrahimoff). Throughout the film, Hanks is actually speaking fluent, authentic Bulgarian.
  • A Powerhouse Creative Team: This film marks one of the iconic collaborations between legendary director Steven Spielberg and composer John Williams.
