📖 WINNER OF THE GOLDEN MAN BOOKER PRIZE 2018
The final curtain is closing on the Second World War in an abandoned Italian villa, where four damaged lives intersect.
Book Overview
As the Second World War draws to a close in an abandoned Italian monastery, Hana, a young Canadian army nurse, tends to her sole remaining patient. Rescued from a burning plane, the anonymous Englishman is damaged beyond recognition and haunted by painful memories. The only clue Hana has to unlocking his past is the one thing he clung on to through the fire—a heavily annotated, dog-eared copy of The Histories by Herodotus, filled with hand-written notes detailing a tragic pre-war love affair across the Sahara Desert.
Weaving together the quiet, post-war realities of the Villa San Girolamo with sweeping flashbacks of desert exploration, espionage, and geopolitical upheaval, Michael Ondaatje’s masterwork explores themes of identity, healing, and the destructive fallout of war.

Frequently Asked Questions About The English Patient
Did this novel win any unique milestone literary awards?
Yes, remarkably so. In addition to winning the original 1992 Booker Prize, this masterpiece achieved a historic milestone in 2018 when it officially won the Golden Man Booker Prize. This unique public-voted honor crowned The English Patient as the absolute best work of fiction out of all Booker Prize winners from the previous fifty years.
What is the main narrative hook and setting driving the plot?
The story unfolds during the final, chaotic months of World War II in an abandoned, bomb-damaged Italian monastery called the Villa San Girolamo in Tuscany. The plot centers on four broken individuals seeking refuge: Hana, an exhausted Canadian army nurse; Caravaggio, a maimed thief and spy; Kip, a wary Indian sapper; and the "English patient"—a nameless, hideously burned man who lies swathed in bandages in an upstairs room.
Who is the mysterious "English patient" and what is his true identity?
While the characters assume he is English due to his accent, his fragmented flashbacks gradually reveal that he is actually Count László de Almásy, a Hungarian aristocrat, geographer, and desert explorer. His memories chronicle a sweeping, pre-war mapping expedition across the Sahara Desert that spiraled into a tragic, forbidden love affair.
What unique writing style and structural choices did Michael Ondaatje make?
The novel is globally celebrated for its lush, deeply poetic, and non-linear stream-of-consciousness prose. It functions as a complex emotional jigsaw puzzle, seamlessly shifting back and forth between the quiet, post-war realities of the Italian villa and the vast, shifting sands of North Africa, utilizing a worn copy of Herodotus’s Histories as a visual framing device.
Was this literary classic adapted into a successful film?
Yes, triumphantly so. The novel served as the direct creative blueprint for the 1996 cinematic masterpiece written and directed by Anthony Minghella. The motion picture adaptation—starring Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, and Kristin Scott Thomas—was a massive box-office hit and went on to win nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
