The Sheltering Sky

by Paul Bowles

🏜️ EXISTENTIALISM & PSYCHOLOGICAL TERROR

A harrowing exploration of post-war disillusionment and the destructive power of cultural incomprehension in the Sahara.

Extended Synopsis

Set against the unforgiving landscape of North Africa shortly after World War II, The Sheltering Sky follows three American travelers—Port Moresby, his wife Kit, and their companion Tunner—as they drift away from the "modern world" and deeper into the Algerian desert. Unlike mere tourists, Port and Kit view themselves as "travelers," seeking a spiritual cure for their profound marital and existential numbness.

The narrative serves as a seminal work of existentialism, portraying the Sahara not just as a setting, but as an impassive, indifferent void that reflects the characters' internal hollows. As they move further from Western civilization, their psychological stability fractures. The "Sheltering Sky" of the title acts as a fragile metaphor: a thin blue membrane protecting humanity from the vast, dark universe behind it. When that protection fails, the result is a literal and metaphorical descent into madness, captivity, and death.
