Extended Synopsis
Universal Economics is a seminal work that builds upon the historic foundations of its two predecessors, University Economics and Exchange and Production. Collaborating for a final presentation of their analytical tools, Professors Armen Alchian and William Allen provide a fresh, comprehensive examination of the economic way of thinking. The text rigorously demonstrates the critical importance of property rights to the existence and success of market economies, explaining the intricate interconnections between goods prices and productive-asset prices.
Through detailed resource allocation models and price theory flowcharts, the authors clarify how market-determined interest rates balance the satisfaction of immediate consumption demands against long-term saving and investment priorities. Furthermore, Alchian and Allen offer a unique application of information and search-cost analysis to the subjects of money, price determination, and inflation, establishing that the crucial role of prices in a market economy cannot be truly understood without a firm grasp of the function of money in the modern world.
