Why Buddhism is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment

by Robert Wright

"Sublime."The New Yorker

From one of America's most brilliant writers, Robert Wright, comes a New York Times bestselling journey through psychology, philosophy, and meditation that reveals how Buddhism holds the key to moral clarity and enduring happiness.

At its heart, Buddhism makes a simple claim: we suffer because we don't see the world clearly. The promise of Buddhist meditative practice is that we can learn to see more clearly and, in doing so, gain a deep and morally valid happiness. In this pathbreaking book, Wright demonstrates how this promise can change your life, drawing on the latest neuroscience, psychology, and an acute understanding of human evolution to explain why this transformation works.

This book is the culmination of Wright's personal journey, which began with his landmark book on evolutionary psychology, The Moral Animal. It is a story that is "provocative, informative and...deeply rewarding" (The New York Times Book Review), as entertaining as it is illuminating. Written with Wright's famous wit, clarity, and grace, Why Buddhism Is True lays the foundation for a spiritual life in a secular age and shows how we can save ourselves from distraction and division, both as individuals and as a species.
