The novel is notable for its fast-paced action and its complex characters. The Wrecking Crew was the second novel featuring Hamilton's ongoing protagonist, Matt Helm.
Matt Helm - The protagonist of the novel, a secret agent working for a clandestine American organization. He is a highly skilled and experienced operative, known for his ruthlessness and efficiency. Eric Hansen is a Swedish businessman and former Nazi collaborator who is the target of Helm's mission. Ingrid is a Swedish woman who becomes involved with Helm and helps him in his mission.
Colonel von Stauffenberg - The former German officer who is now working with Hansen. Then there’s Dr. Weiss. The German scientist who is working on a new weapon for Hansen.
The novel begins with Helm being sent to Sweden to assassinate Eric Hansen, a Swedish businessman who is suspected of being a Nazi collaborator. Helm quickly learns that Hansen is more than he seems, and that he is involved in a plot to develop a new weapon that could threaten the security of the United States.
Helm teams up with Ingrid, a Swedish woman who becomes involved with him and helps him in his mission.
Together, they must race against time to stop Hansen and his plot.
